“Indian Summer” at The Byrne Gallery

MIDDLEBURG, VA — The Byrne Gallery in Middleburg, Virginia, is pleased to announce its show for September 2023, “Indian Summer,” on view from September 1 through 30. The exhibition celebrates our desire to capture and hold on to that last evanescent bit of summer. It will feature a selection of oil-on-canvas paintings by local artist Lida Matheson Stifel.

Stifel’s paintings in the show include landscapes, still lifes, and abstracts that illustrate the last brilliant colors of summer as the season fades into fall with her plein air technique. She has exhibited with The Byrne Gallery for many years, but this will be her first one-woman show.

There will be a special reception for the artist on Saturday, September 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. with refreshments provided. Both the exhibition and the reception are open to the public and all are welcome to attend!

Lida Matheson Stifel attended The Corcoran School of Art studying with William Christianberry. Since then, she has exhibited her works across the U.S. for over 40 years. Drawing inspiration from the natural world, she strives to imbue her pieces with an aura of energy and spontaneity. Her small farm in Montgomery, Maryland, provides her with the opportunity to capture scenes ranging from sweeping country landscapes to the smallest and most charming details of rural life. As a plein air painter, Stifel prefers to work directly from her subject in order to achieve a sense of immediacy, immortalizing the fleeting moment in time to which she is the only witness. Stifel has been selected to participate in over 30 juried exhibitions and is a member of the Washington Society of Landscape Painters, the Mid Atlantic Plein Air Painters, and Oil Painters of America.

The Byrne Gallery is located at 7 West Washington Street, Middleburg, VA. Contact the gallery at (540) 687-6986 or byrnegallery@aol.com. Find them online @byrnegallery on Facebook and Instagram.
